Summary

FROM THE BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF OUR HOUSE, WINNER OF THE CRIME & THRILLER BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD

On the morning of Monday 23rd December, Jamie Buckby takes the commuter riverboat from his home in St Mary’s, southeast London, to work in Central London, noting that his good friend and neighbour Kit Roper has not turned up for the 7。30am service they usually catch together。

At the London Eye, where he disembarks for his job in a café behind the South Bank Centre, Jamie is met by the police。 Kit has been reported missing by his wife。

As Jamie is taken in for questioning, he discovers someone saw him arguing with Kit on the boat home late on Friday night。 The other passenger believes Jamie committed murder。

But what really happened?

Not read many books where I have such a dislike for a character。。。。。I was reeled in and enjoyed the twists!

What a twist。。。 slows part way but stick with it and you will be surprised, not once but twice。 Good plot!

I will keep this vague to avoid spoilers。 I was expecting a thriller but the story is nothing more than an account of an incident。 Predictable and babbles。 I was expecting the story to take an unexpected turn。 Nothing。 I especially don't get that part with the so called twist - how was it relevant to the plot at all? I give this a one star as the book should have been classified as fiction and nothing more。 I will keep this vague to avoid spoilers。 I was expecting a thriller but the story is nothing more than an account of an incident。 Predictable and babbles。 I was expecting the story to take an unexpected turn。 Nothing。 I especially don't get that part with the so called twist - how was it relevant to the plot at all? Very good, creative and surprising twists and turns in this Brit mystery。 One couple in their fifties, another in their twenties get together and drama ensues。 I’m not sure what I can say here without spoiling the plot, so let me just let you know that it’s well written, extremely well thought out, and character development that really brings them all to life。 This has movie written all over it。 Well worth reading。 Gotta go, time for me to see what else the author has written。 #netgalley #theoth Very good, creative and surprising twists and turns in this Brit mystery。 One couple in their fifties, another in their twenties get together and drama ensues。 I’m not sure what I can say here without spoiling the plot, so let me just let you know that it’s well written, extremely well thought out, and character development that really brings them all to life。 This has movie written all over it。 Well worth reading。 Gotta go, time for me to see what else the author has written。 #netgalley #theotherpassenger 。。。more

This truly deserves 5 stars。 Gripped from beginning to end。 As a fan of all things crime orientated including and not limited to serial killer documentaries, crim thrillers, mystery dramas, conspiracy theories; I can honestly say that even I did not expect the twists and turns from this book。 Exceptional writing all but a very few mistakes through the entire book in which any publisher worth their salt should have picked up on。 For instance, and and in the same sentence? Great readI am a massive fan of Louise Candlish and this book does not dissapoint。 From the first page you are invested in the characters。 Fast paced with great twists。 Definitely a 5 star rating in my humble opinion。

I love Louise Candlish books, so I was thrilled to be approved for this title and quickly dove in。Jamie and Clare are seemingly content in their lives together when they meet Melia and Kit, a young, quasi-actor couple who quickly become part of their group。 Dinners and drinks and plenty of socializing, Jamie is caught off guard when, on his way to work, he's approached by two detectives with shocking news。 Kit is missing, and according to an anonymous passenger, he was the last one to see him al I love Louise Candlish books, so I was thrilled to be approved for this title and quickly dove in。Jamie and Clare are seemingly content in their lives together when they meet Melia and Kit, a young, quasi-actor couple who quickly become part of their group。 Dinners and drinks and plenty of socializing, Jamie is caught off guard when, on his way to work, he's approached by two detectives with shocking news。 Kit is missing, and according to an anonymous passenger, he was the last one to see him alive。 What follows is a twisty suspense where everyone is hiding secrets and nothing is as it seems。I was torn about this book and had to sit on my review for a few days。 The first half of the book was a tad slow and cumbersome。 Candlish takes her time building characters and motivations, and while she was successful in that respect, the propulsion was missing at times。 Large sections were devoted to the mundane monotony of the commute and the burgeoning relationships。 It's necessary to set up the intrigue for later, but I think readers who are expecting a jump-out-of-your-seat suspense might need to brace for a slow-burn。I loved the twists, and once the mystery picks up, it's a fast read。 The characters were despicable in their own ways, and I wouldn't say I particularly liked any of them。 Not that it's a necessity, but with the investment you have in the first half, I wanted to root for one of them and found myself。。。not。 Was I curious how the story would play out? Yes。 Absolutely。 But the most interesting parts were glossed over, told in past tense or generalized passive memories。 I would've loved to see a little more of that and a little less of the commute to start。 If you're a fan of character heavy storylines and unreliable narrators, this might be the book for you, but the pacing missed the mark for me。 Overall, The Other Passenger was an interesting suspense with a motley crew of untrustworthy characters who will definitely leave you guessing until the very last page。 Thank you to Atria and NetGalley for providing an eARC in exchange for honest review consideration。 。。。more

It was good with a couple of twists, I just didn’t warn to any of the characters at all。

Two couples met on a river bus along Thames。 One older, one younger。 The younger ones were exciting, rebellious and money-centred while the older ones were more calm and enjoyed life as it is。 They became fast friends。 One day the younger couple's guy went missing and investigations followed。 It was a lot of narratives and yes, although the ending was twisty and interesting, but too much narratives (from just a single pov, the older guy) getting there just kinda spoil it。 Two couples met on a river bus along Thames。 One older, one younger。 The younger ones were exciting, rebellious and money-centred while the older ones were more calm and enjoyed life as it is。 They became fast friends。 One day the younger couple's guy went missing and investigations followed。 It was a lot of narratives and yes, although the ending was twisty and interesting, but too much narratives (from just a single pov, the older guy) getting there just kinda spoil it。 。。。more

Gripping, exciting and completely addictive! I'm becoming a huge fan of Louise's work。 This book was no exception。 I was gripped right from the start and found it difficult to put down。 The storyline had me guessing constantly and surprised me throughout。 It pleases me when I am unable to figure out how the story will end。 Gripping, exciting and completely addictive! If I could give this book 6 stars I would。 Twist after twist with really good character development。 Not really one to read books more than once but I think this might be the exception。

Kit and Jamie travel to Central London via river and as they are on the same schedule, they eventually strike up a friendship。 Jamie's partner Clare and Kit's partner Melia get together for dinner and it soon becomes obvious that the younger couple Kit and Melia are jealous of the older Jamie and Clare who have worked hard and live a near perfect lifestyle。 Then one morning Kit does not show up for the commute and that evening, Jamie learns that Melia has reported Kit missing and he is questione Kit and Jamie travel to Central London via river and as they are on the same schedule, they eventually strike up a friendship。 Jamie's partner Clare and Kit's partner Melia get together for dinner and it soon becomes obvious that the younger couple Kit and Melia are jealous of the older Jamie and Clare who have worked hard and live a near perfect lifestyle。 Then one morning Kit does not show up for the commute and that evening, Jamie learns that Melia has reported Kit missing and he is questioned by the police。 Another passenger has seen Jamie and Kit arguing on the riverboat that previous evening。 There are twists and just when you think you have it solved, another turn takes you in a new direction。I could not fully connect with the characters and found some of the chapters passive and drawn out。 Not a book for me, but still a fairly interesting mystery。I thank the publisher, author and Netgalley for my ARC in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more

I got through this book really fast and the characters made me curious but there was always something that never quite worked / clicked for me。 Easy read but no one to care about or root for。

A good read full of twists and turns well described characters and a wonderful sense of the riverboat commute None of the characters were likeable which made it more interesting trying to guess which one was the best actor or lier and most evil。 It kept me page turning to the end 。

Thank you for the opportunity to preview The Other Passenger by Louise Candish。 I was looking for a book that was out of the ordinary and one i could not put down。 Well I found it。 This is deliciously addictive。 When a middle aged couple meet a younger couple, they feel like they have found new friends。 This couple is fun, daring, and attracitive - Introduce Kit and Melia。 They live week to week, do a line or two on the weekend, and are carefree and exciting to be around for Jamie and Clare, the Thank you for the opportunity to preview The Other Passenger by Louise Candish。 I was looking for a book that was out of the ordinary and one i could not put down。 Well I found it。 This is deliciously addictive。 When a middle aged couple meet a younger couple, they feel like they have found new friends。 This couple is fun, daring, and attracitive - Introduce Kit and Melia。 They live week to week, do a line or two on the weekend, and are carefree and exciting to be around for Jamie and Clare, the middle-aged couple。But soon, they dynamics of the relationship begin to change - Melia tells Jamie she is attracted to him and soon an affair begins。But things are complicated - Jamie works at a coffee shop - he used to have a good job, but now he is content to fill cups of hot java - Clare is the breadwinner, she's in real estate。 Melia works with Clare and Kit works in Finance but they spend their money quicker than they make it。 Jamie likes being an underachiever, he lives off Clare's family fortune, and is taken immediately by Melia。Jamie can't believe this young beautiful woman could possibly be intersted in him - she's beautiful - Jamie's is smitten immediately and so a torrid affair begins。 But things start to unravel because Melia has plans and it's these plans that set in motion a series of events that change the lives of these four people forever。This book is written in first person - Jamie tells the story。 This is well written and engrossing - and I didn't see the ending coming。 Again, i was looking for a good book and instead I found a great book。5 stars。 RECOMMEND。 。。。more

This started off slowly for me。 The story is told from the POV of Jamie, a 40 something man, who works in a cafe, travelling to work on the London Riverboat service。 His partner Clare works in property and they live rent free in a large house that belongs to Clare's parents。 They form an unlikely friendship with a younger couple, Melia and Kit (Christopher)。 The book starts with Kit disappearing at the end of 2019 and Jamie recounting the previous year and their developing friendship。 It's a bit This started off slowly for me。 The story is told from the POV of Jamie, a 40 something man, who works in a cafe, travelling to work on the London Riverboat service。 His partner Clare works in property and they live rent free in a large house that belongs to Clare's parents。 They form an unlikely friendship with a younger couple, Melia and Kit (Christopher)。 The book starts with Kit disappearing at the end of 2019 and Jamie recounting the previous year and their developing friendship。 It's a bit dull in places, particularly at the start, and the characters are not very likeable but then comes a twist。 And another。 Things were not as I expected and I was hooked。 I needed to see what was going to happen。 I read late into the night! 。。。more

A decent thriller that picked up in the final 120 pages。 There's a lot of exposition to wade through before finally something begins to develop and really take shape。 The pay-off for sticking with it is there but it pales in comparison to Our House, which I found much more gripping and fun。 A decent thriller that picked up in the final 120 pages。 There's a lot of exposition to wade through before finally something begins to develop and really take shape。 The pay-off for sticking with it is there but it pales in comparison to Our House, which I found much more gripping and fun。 。。。more

Deeply unlikeable and poorly drawn characters, silly twists and pedantic writing。 Found myself desperately to get the end just so it would be over。

Complicated story of have and want to haves。 When things seem straightforward they may not be。 Set partly on the london riverboats。

With Jamie as the narrator, this story moves backwards and forwards in time as he examines everything that has happened over the past year, gradually revealing the truth, not only about his and Kit’s increasingly ambivalent friendship but also about the layers of complexity between all the main characters。 Through the twists and turns of some labyrinthine plotting, a web of lies, deception and dishonesty is revealed and it quickly becomes clear that, with each of the characters hiding secrets, n With Jamie as the narrator, this story moves backwards and forwards in time as he examines everything that has happened over the past year, gradually revealing the truth, not only about his and Kit’s increasingly ambivalent friendship but also about the layers of complexity between all the main characters。 Through the twists and turns of some labyrinthine plotting, a web of lies, deception and dishonesty is revealed and it quickly becomes clear that, with each of the characters hiding secrets, no one can be regarded as truly ‘innocent’。 The significance of any of these deceptions in relation to Kit’s disappearance is something which shifts as each new revelation is exposed。 However, what very quickly becomes apparent as the story unfolds is that, without exception the characters are, in one way or another, self-centred and disagreeable。 The author’s acutely perceptive depictions of each of them brought them leaping from the page as people whose behaviour I found both fascinating and repellent, probably because they were so stereotypically recognisable as characters it’s very easy to feel superior to! However, whilst I don’t need to find characters likeable in order to be able to enjoy a story, in fact they’re often the most fascinating, there was something which felt unremittingly unlikeable about this particular ‘cast’ – I found myself longing for someone with some redeeming features! Although I’d predicted the main twist in the plot at an early stage (I’m probably reading too many psychological thrillers!) there were enough well-executed red-herrings along the way to provide some surprises, and I thought the author’s final resolutions were credible。 However, especially in the first half of the book, I did find it difficult to remain engaged with the story and think that this was because not only did I think there was too much repetition of certain themes, but I was also finding the pacing rather inconsistent。 What I think the author captured exceptionally well were some of the intergenerational conflicts which are becoming a feature of today’s society。 She used Kit and Melia to portray the resentments and envy felt by many millennials towards older generations who benefitted from free university education, better job security, affordable housing etc。, whilst using Clare and Jamie to reflect some of the impatience they felt about their younger friends’ rather cavalier attitude to amassing even more debt in order to enjoy a lifestyle they feel entitled to, but seem unwilling to work for。 However, she also explored how quickly life can change for anyone, of any age, when an increasingly uncertain job market can so easily lead to unemployment and financial uncertainty for people of any generation, with the consequent stresses on relationships as the balance of power changes。 I loved the evocative descriptions of London landmarks as seen by Jamie during his riverboat commute, and the fact that the ever-changing nature of the Thames, with its often muddy murkiness and hidden depths became a metaphor for the lives of the characters and the unfolding plot! Although I can’t say I enjoyed this story, in fact there were moments when I felt ‘grubby’ as a result of spending so much time in the company of quite so many unlikeable, unreliable characters, and, as already indicated, have some reservations about its pacing, I do think that the themes it explores would encourage plenty of discussion in book groups! 。。。more
